Space Girls ON FILM lands in Gympie for a night of cinema, live music, and community

Gympie will play host to an evening of film, live music, visual art and community connection on Friday 26 June when Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival and Space Girls Festival join forces for ON FILM.

Designed as a welcoming, inclusive event for the whole community, ON FILM celebrates women’s and LGBTIQ+ voices in screen and music while creating a space where people of all ages can come together to share stories, support creativity and connect with one another.

Held at the Gympie Music Hall, the event will feature a curated program of short films exploring identity, resilience and self-expression, followed by a live performance from Sunshine Coast feminist punk trio Lattes for MILFs.

Adding another creative dimension to the evening, The Very Fabric of Society, an art project and photographic exhibition by Cindy Vogels and Brea Martin, will be on display throughout the venue. The exhibition, previously showcased at Gympie’s ART POST, explores themes of community, belonging and connection through collaborative visual storytelling.

Space Girls Festival Founder and Co-Director Cindy Vogels said the event was intentionally designed to be accessible and welcoming to everyone.

“This event centres female and LGBTIQ+ voices, but it is absolutely for everyone,” said Cindy.

“Whether you’re coming for the films, the music, the art or simply to spend time with your community, we want people to feel comfortable, included and inspired. The more diverse the audience, the richer the conversations and connections become.”

The event is proudly supported by headspace Gympie, who will create a dedicated Chill Zone within the venue where attendees can relax, connect and take a break from the action throughout the evening.

headspace Gympie will also provide a free sausage sizzle, with drinks and snacks available for purchase.

Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival Director Nicole Harper said the partnership reflects the festival’s long-standing commitment to building empathy and community through storytelling.

“For twenty years Heart of Gold has brought people together through stories that celebrate our shared humanity,” said Nicole.

“ON FILM continues that tradition by creating a space where different forms of creative expression come together and where people from across our community can gather, listen, learn and support one another.”

The film program has been curated by 20-year-old Heart of Gold intern Liz Wilkinson and includes comedy, animation, music-inspired storytelling and a local documentary.

“It’s exciting to give younger people a voice in shaping cultural experiences for our community,” said Nicole.

“Liz has put together a program that is entertaining, thoughtful and accessible, and we’re thrilled to share it with audiences.”

Importantly, ON FILM is an all-ages event. No alcohol will be sold at the venue and attendees are asked not to bring alcohol onto the premises.

With affordable ticket prices, community activities, visual art, film and live music all under one roof, ON FILM offers a unique opportunity for Gympie residents and visitors alike to come together and celebrate creativity, diversity and connection.
