The Phosphenes – ‘Cletus’ EP Release

Up-and-coming Caboolture alt-rock three-piece The Phosphenes are back for more with the upcoming release of their sophomore EP ‘Cletus’ on the 2nd of August. This new six-track addition to their catalogue offers a newer, more confident approach to their already distinctive sound- no frills, tight rock.

Included on the EP are their recently released singles ‘No More’ and ‘Plastic Dream’, both of which have caught the attention of many thanks to their effortless storytelling and unforgettable, singalong choruses combined with polished instrumental arrangements, described as “just a whole heap of catchy, loud as fuck rock n roll, vocals on the cusp of tearing, and rhythm section ripping you a new one.” (The Point Music News). These single tracks showcase The Phosphenes for what they’re really capable of: creating original rock that pushes 3 fundamental instruments to their full potential, emulating the classic 90s fuzzed-up sound you know and love combined with a memorable hook to hum on your way home.

Joining these standout singles on the new EP ‘Cletus’ are 4 shiny new tracks that build on the grungy foundation of their debut EP ‘Loose’- ‘Hate You’, ‘Someday’, ‘Break The News’, and ‘Monkey Song’. These new songs draw influence from the iconic sounds of bands like Blur, You Am I, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Jebediah and other 90s staples.

The opening track ‘Hate You’ quickly sets the tone for what’s to come on the EP- high energy riffs with relentless, energetic drumming, dynamic, steady basslines, ripping guitar solos, vocals that switch from melodic to tearing screams and a fun catchy melody that’s bound to stick.

‘Someday’ serves as another track with dynamic variety- building up from its bare-bones opening of droning vocals and simplistic drums and bass that explode into a screaming grunge chorus.

‘Break The News’ is The Phosphenes at their best- 4 minutes of crashing, in your face drums, driving bass, thick, distorted rhythm guitar, face-melting solos and raw, screaming vocals working together on this electric track.

‘Monkey Song’ is the perfect conclusion to the EP- a loose, thrashing anthem with a huge sound that pushes their instruments and vocals to their breaking point of volume and energy.

‘Cletus’ is a collection that encapsulates just who The Phosphenes are- rock and roll teens making music just how they like it: honest, original, and most of all, loud. The EP not only highlights the band’s growth as artists but also sends a message loud and clear: The Phosphenes have only just begun, and they are here to stay.

With its blend of witty lyricism, dynamic instrumentals, unforgettable melodies, and relatable themes ‘Cletus’ demonstrates that The Phosphenes are finding their feet in the industry and are ready to show the world what they’ve got.
