Singer-Songwriter Nellie Celebrates a Business Milestone
Nellie Celebrates 10 Years In the Hair Business
There is a lot to celebrate when it comes to running a small business in today’s economy. However, facing the ever-increasing cost of living, COVID-19, and staff shortages, Nellie keeps on growing and building her career in hairdressing.
Ten years ago, Col and I travelled around Australia with our two boys, Levi and Diezel, trying to decide where to settle before they started school. Maleny was our first choice as I grew up in the area, and Col also fell in love with it.
Nellie started her career 25 years ago with a very successful hair salon in Montville on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. But her heart has always longed to create a business in Maleny, where her grandparents owned Watson’s garage and the guest house, and the family built several homes by hand on Fig Street that still stand proud. Nellie’s mother, Glenda (Watson) Braden, and her late father, Kevin Braden, were from Conondale, where they had a dairy farm and were famous for the school bus run. This family history gave Nellie the confidence to start her hairdressing business in Maleny. “I had always thought of just being a solo hair salon, but the reputation and client list grew fast”. It wasn’t long until Nellie’s long-time friend, Annette English, joined the family. Together, they built a team of now six, including Annette English, Jenny Hayes, Brooke Franks, Tiana Green, and Nellie.
They are all locals, and Nellie feels incredibly blessed to have a fantastic team of women to work with and call family. The incredible, loyal support of our local clients and the many who travel up the range to get the Nellie creative hair treatment is what keeps Nellie’s passion for hair alive. Her husband, Col, and her boys, Levi and Diezel, have always been by her side, providing her with endless support.
The Maleny community is one very special place, always supporting us, for which we are all very grateful. Nellie’s creative hair treats everyone who walks through their doors like family. And Nellie is so proud of her team to celebrate ten years in business, which is something she could never have imagined, but all the hard work does pay off.
