SERGE & THE CURRENTS Find The Bright Side Of Heartbreak On New Single ‘Finished From The Start

Melbourne-based guitar-driven pop project Serge & The Currents return with new single ‘Finished From The Start’, pairing bright indie pop-rock energy with bittersweet lyrics about knowing when a relationship has reached its end.

Fronted by guitarist, songwriter, composer and educator Sergio Ercole, Serge & The Currents blends classic songwriting with modern pop influences. After more than four decades of performing, composing and teaching classical and Latin guitar across Italy, the United States and Australia, Ercole brings a sense of ‘future nostalgia’ to the project, balancing familiar melodies with a fresh, modern sensibility.

‘Finished From The Start’ captures the point where effort in a relationship is no longer returned. Despite wanting to connect and make things work, the other person remains distant, leaving the narrator to accept that the relationship was never going to move forward.

That frustration is set against one of the track’s most noticeable features: its bright and energetic sound. Electric and acoustic guitars, bass, keyboards and fast-moving drums give the song an upbeat indie pop-rock feel, creating a clear contrast with its more bitter lyrical themes. Ercole’s cherry red Gibson 335 remains a defining part of the track’s guitar-led sound.

The song closes on a more philosophical note, with Ercole turning the experience into a lesson in self-preservation. He shares:

“This song is about reaching that point in a relationship where you realise it was never going to work. You’ve put so much effort into making a connection, inspired by the other person and wanting something meaningful, only to be met with apathy and a lack of reciprocation. Ultimately, it’s about accepting that reality and learning when to walk away.”

Following the release of their debut single ‘This Too Shall Pass’, Serge & The Currents earned media support from Scenestr, AAA Backstage, Aus Music Scene, Australian Musician Magazine and Country Down Under, alongside radio airplay across ABC Victoria, Southern FM, 4ZZZ, Amazing Radio (UK/US) and many more community radio stations throughout Australia.

Continuing a new chapter in Ercole’s extensive musical career, ‘Finished From The Start’ showcases his knack for pairing infectious, guitar-driven pop-rock with heartfelt storytelling, finding an uplifting energy in the bittersweet realities of love and relationships. The single arrives Friday, November 6.
