After a compelling Gympie premiere that has already sparked conversations about women’s voices, family relationships and emotional wellbeing, Perseverance Street Theatre Company is bringing its acclaimed new production Sisters to Brisbane for a strictly limited four-performance season.
Opening Friday 3 July at the Queensland Multicultural Centre, Sisters is an original Queensland work by co-writers Sharon Hogan and Sofia Abbey that blends psychological thriller, dark comedy and feminist fantasy into an unforgettable 80 -minute theatrical experience.
Set over one extraordinary night in an isolated beach house, two sisters must decide whether to take action or return to life as usual.
Co-writer and director Dr Sharon Hogan believes the story resonates because it asks difficult questions without offering easy answers.
“The play isn’t interested in telling audiences what to think,” Hogan said.
“It’s about memory, responsibility and the complicated relationships that define us. As the story unfolds, audiences begin questioning not only the characters but their own assumptions about truth, family and loyalty.”
Co-writer Sofia Abbey said the work speaks directly to contemporary conversations around emotional wellbeing and the unseen pressures many women continue to navigate.
“These conversations matter because they are happening every day,” Abbey said.
“Sisters explores the quieter forms of emotional pressure and asks audiences to consider what happens when silence becomes easier than speaking.”
Produced by Gympie-based Perseverance Street Theatre Company, the production demonstrates the strength of regional Queensland’s professional arts sector, bringing an ambitious new work from regional development to a Brisbane audience.
Starring acclaimed actor Kerith Atkinson alongside Jo Loth, Sisters balances suspense, humour and emotional depth while leaving audiences to decide for themselves what really happened.
With just four performances scheduled, audiences have a limited opportunity to experience one of Queensland’s newest original theatre works.
