WHO IS TELLING THE TRUTH?

Did Amy poison her husband? Or is she desperately trying to save him? And what exactly does her sister Andrea know?

These are just some of the questions audiences will grapple with in Sisters, the new darkly funny feminist fantasy from co-writers Sharon Hogan and Sofia Abbey, premiering in Brisbane this month.

Set in an isolated beach house, Sisters follows two sisters trapped together as they navigate a crisis that quickly spirals into suspicion, accusation and absurdity. As secrets emerge and loyalties shift, audiences are left questioning everything they see and hear.

Is Amy innocent? Has her husband been poisoned? Is his condition self-inflicted? And if someone is guilty, who is it? The truth remains tantalisingly out of reach.

Equal parts psychological thriller, family drama and black comedy, Sisters keeps audiences on the edge of their seats as they piece together conflicting memories, hidden motives and uncomfortable truths.

Co-writer and director Dr Sharon Hogan said the play grew from a single event that occurred almost two decades ago in a remote regional community.

“The seed of the play was inspired by a real event, but beyond that initial spark, everything is fictional,” Hogan said.

“What fascinated us was not what happened, but how people remember events differently. Memory is unreliable. Truth is slippery. Everyone believes they are telling the truth, even when their stories don’t align.”

Over more than two years, three creative developments and seventeen drafts, Hogan and co-writer Sofia Abbey transformed that initial inspiration into a suspense-filled theatrical experience that explores family loyalty, generational trauma, mental health and the stories we tell ourselves to survive.

Abbey said audiences should expect twists, tension and plenty of dark humour.

“At its heart, this is a mystery,” Abbey said.

“The sisters are trying to make sense of what has happened, but they are also confronting their own histories, resentments and desires. The audience becomes the detective, constantly reassessing who they believe and what they think is true.”

The result is a sharp, witty and unsettling production that balances laugh-out-loud moments with genuine emotional stakes.

As the mystery deepens, one question remains: Who is innocent—and who isn’t?

Starring acclaimed actors Kerith Atkinson and Jo Loth, with cameo performance from Paul Bishop, Sisters is presented by Perseverance Street Theatre Company.
