11 March 2023: For a town built on the profits of gold, there was probably never a better destination selected by the makers of MONOPOLY for its own dedicated board game.

Gympie is known the “the town that saved Queensland” – because of the contribution to the State’s economy through its gold production –  and those halcyon days have been recaptured on the town’s own custom MONOPOLY board.

Fittingly, the launch took place at Gympie’s most significant and enduring tourism attraction (and featured on the MONOPOLY board) – Historical Gympie Station, home of the Mary Valley Rattler.

The Rattler has serviced the region for over 100 years, firstly as a passenger and goods train and more recently as a premium tourist experience.

The Gympie destination MONOPOLY edition was first mooted in June 2023, leading to hundreds of suggestions on what should be included on the board.

After careful deliberation, the custom themed squares and cards were announced along with special gold tokens that players can incorporate into the game, paying tribute to the town’s rich gold mining roots.

Some of Gympie’s most popular tourism destinations such as Rainbow Beach and Tin Can Bay were included, as were famous attractions such as the Mary Valley Rattler and Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum, and events including the Gympie Muster.

The MONOPOLY game first hit shelves in 1935 and since then it has been played by more than one billion people. Today, the game is adored all around the world, being played in 114 countries and enjoyed in over 47 different languages.
